Despite stiff competition from some of the most unsightly canines in the States, Martha, a slack-jawed Neapolitan Mastiff with cascading rolls of excessive skin, was crowned winner of the 29th annual 'World’s Ugliest Dog' competition in Petaluma, California, on Saturday.
Martha’s never-ending jowls, drooping red eyes, and atypical size won her the $1,500 (€1,340) cash prize. The jury's announcement was met by a round of applause, with the Mastiff beating 12 other serious contenders for the title.
Dogs were not only judged on their appearance, but also on their background, with the aim being to raise awareness about abandoned or mistreated animals and promote animal adoption.
