Clashes broke out between students from the Birzeit University and Israeli security forces in al-Bireh, Saturday as violence continued to grip the West Bank. The clashes erupted at the northern entrance of the Palestinian city of al-Bireh, located next to the illegal Orthodox Jewish Beit El settlement. Israeli security forces fired tear gas at the protesting students, who responded by throwing rocks. The student council of the university called on the students to demonstrate after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh declared the start of a new intifada on Friday. According to the Red Cross medical agency, at least 900 Palestinians have been injured throughout the West Bank and Jerusalem in seven consecutive days of protests and clashes with Israeli security forces, while six Palestinians have been shot dead and scores injured during protests on the Gaza-Israel border on Friday. The violence has drawn the attention of the international press and led to statements from political leaders, who are concerned over the possibilities of a third intifada (uprising).
