Local Stuttgart police officials were forced to respond to criticism on Wednesday after a video surfaced on social media showing several police officers beating and detaining a man because he was smoking a cigarette.
Further footage of the violent attack that occurred on February 19 was released on Thursday, showing a passenger involved in a car crash lighting a cigarette following the accident. After the gentlemen tried to light his cigarette again, one officer pulled the man to the floor by his neck.
Once on the ground, two other officers helped their colleague pin the man down, one repeatedly beating the passenger with a baton while another punched the man in the head.
Another police officer stopped an onlooker from intervening.
According to the Stuttgart prosecutor's office, two of the officers have been suspended from street patrol, with a further two under investigation. The enquiry into the attack was launched on February 20, a day after the incident.
