German car giant BMW unveiled its futuristic self-driving Vision Next 100 concept car as the company celebrates its 100th birthday in Munich, Monday.
The new model is build out of carbonfibre and composite materials, has autonomous driving technology and a four-door monospace design. "The model has the sights of BMW 5 Series and interior dimensions of the BMW 7 Series. So we are definitely moving in general trend of the brand," said Senior Vice President BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk during the presentation.
Vision Next 100 is the first of four major concepts that the German automaker will reveal this year.
Several high-ranking German politicians including Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer and Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter participated in the event. German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent her video address to the audience. "BMW is a trade mark that stands for long traditions, high levels of engineering art and drive for driving," she stated, adding that "BMW sets trends and always new goals."
Other events to mark 100 years of BMW include exhibitions in Munich at BMW Welt and its museum, where key models from its past are displayed. From September 9 to 11, a special festival will be held across the grounds of the Olympic Park in Munich.
