@geologynature Awakening a volcano 🌋 by throwing a Rock This demonstration took place at the volcano Erta Ale (or Ertale or Irta’ale), a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is in the Afar Depression, a badland desert area spanning the border with Eritrea, and the volcano itself is surrounded completely by an area below sea level making it a relatively low-elevation volcano. It is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. There’s a misconception going around that the object thrown into the volcano was a rock, but this isn’t true. It was an assortment of organic matter (think compost) and was flung to test what would happen to a human body in the central vent of a volcano. As you can see, the result is ferocious. Certain types are lava are like incredibly viscous, extremely hot carbonated water, minus the water part. If you disturb the composition by, let’s say, throwing a bunch of organic matter into it, the dissolved gasses begin to nucleate around and it’ll start to fizz. In this case, it bubbled rather violently. This coupled with the instant vaporisation of the water content of the organic matter, causing the produced steam to expand quickly and push the lava apart, makes for quite a spectacle.
