A homeless cat shelter in St Petersburg has discovered a pet with a rare mathematical talent, footage released on Monday shows.
Maru the cat has shown Pavlov's dog a thing or two. Workers at the cat shelter, Republic of Cats, believe one of their feline residents, Maru, knows how to answer questions about simple arithmetic by ringing a bell.
Trainers ask the cat a question and Maru replies by weighing his chin down on a little bell. He is then given a treat for signalling the correct answer.
Republic of Cats worker, Vitaly, explained how they trained him. Vitaly said, "we had him press it [the bell] with his paw and would give him food for this."
He explained that whilst training him was "some hard work", he was pleased to have achieved "some positive results".
Republic of Cats is both a cafe and a shelter. It works on a sustainable model, where the cafe's proceeds are used to support the upkeep of the pets and then the patrons are invited to cuddle the pets when taking a drink.
