The Olympic torch was lit in an official Olympic ceremony in the Ancient Greek city of Olympia, Thursday, ahead of the 2016 Rio Games, during a ceremony in which a Syrian refugee who has claimed asylum in Greece was one of the torch bearers.
The ceremony, which was performed by people dressed in ancient Greek costumes, marks the 80th anniversary of the first lighting in 1936. The Olympic torch will be handed over to Brazilian officials in a ceremony on April 27 in Athens.
The 2016 Summer Olympics torch relay will run from 21 April to 5 August, 2016, in advance of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The torch will begin its Brazilian journey on 3 May, visiting more than 300 Brazilian cities, including all 26 state capitals and the Federal District. The Brazilian leg will begin in the capital, Brasilia, and end in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium, the main venue of the 2016 Olympic Games.
