Russian President Vladimir Putin joined the Navy Day festivities in Baltiysk, Kaliningrad, on Sunday, praising the Russian Navy’s accomplishments in recent years. Putin attended the parade held in honour of the Russian Navy, before addressing the crowd at the event. The Russian president started his speech by congratulating current and previous sailors before listing the accomplishments of the navy, calling it “the pride of Russia.” Putin continued to commend the force, saying that since its creation by Peter the Great, the navy had “distinguished itself” and to this day continues to protect Russia’s “national interests … with dignity.” Events will be held all over Russia throughout Sunday to celebrate Navy Day. Residents and visitors can attend free concerts, watch naval parades and enjoy firework displays. Russia's Navy Day dates back to the Soviet era, having been established in 1939. The celebration was dissolved in 1980 before President Putin reinstated it in 2003. Each year it is now celebrated on the last Sunday of July.
