Hundreds of people gathered in front of University of Havana on Saturday, to pay tribute to the father of the Cuban revolution Fidel Castro, who passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday.
The students of Havana University and members of the student's union staged a rally and unfolded a huge Cuban flag on the steps in front of the main university building. Many students also queued up to sign a tribute book for the revolutionary leader. One students commented that Cuba "didn't simply lose the leader of the [Cuban] revolution, but also a great mind that left a trace in the 20th and 21st century."
Castro served as leader of the Cuban revolution and governed as prime minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008. In 2008 he handed the reins of power over to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from Cuba's political scene. Labelled as the world's last Cold War leader, Castro survived a turbulent century, geopolitical tensions and dozens of US assassination attempts against him.
