Moscow’s Victory Day parade kicked off on Monday at exactly 10.00 local time, marking the 71st anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.
An honour guard started by trooping the Russian flag and the famous Victory Banner that was hoisted above the Reichstag in 1945.
They were accompanied by music of the famous song “Sacred War” and were followed by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who congratulated the troops on "the Great Victory" with the soldiers responding with chants of "ura."
First to march through the square after Shoigu’s departure were the students of the Moscow and Tver Suvorov military schools, then a joint group of the Nakhimov naval school and the Kronstadt naval cadet corps.
Russia’s biggest event marking the final capitulation of Nazi Germany will see around ten thousand troops from all branches of the armed services march across Red Square.
Around 200 units of military equipment including 71 aircraft, one for every year since the end of the war, are taking part - including a number of Sukhoi Su-35s jets that served in Syria. For the first time, female service personnel will take part alongside a wide range of weaponry.
The parade will feature around 5,000 soldiers and 200 units of military hardware and 71 aircraft, including the multiple rocket launcher system Polonaise; the Lis combat vehicle; the Uragan and Tor-M2 missile systems; SP guns; and howitzers; as well as a range of tanks, armoured vehicles and self-propelled artillery systems.
