The US Senate voted along party lines to approve the rules for the impeachment trial of US President Donald Trump, early on Wednesday morning, after Senate Republicans successfully blocked all 11 Democratic amendments.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer repeatedly proposed amendments intended to force key witnesses to testify and different government departments to hand over records and information, only to be blocked by Republicans each time.
Under the rules passed each side will have 24 hours to present its within three days, with the trial set to continue on Wednesday afternoon.
Trump is facing impeachment over charges of abuse of power as well as obstruction of Congress, but with a Republican majority in the Senate and a super-majority required for a conviction, the president looks set to remain in office.
